CORPORATE LEVEL
The recent hiring of a new "green behind the ears" employee, fresh from college awakened our company as to its wasteful habits. We immediately conducted an assessment of the situation and found that indeed we were a wasteful company. Steps have been small to start but we are developing an increasing awareness of our role in environmental impact.
A recycle program has been initiated for both office waste and waste from jobsites. Energy conservation measures have also been instituted. We have also joined the Recycling Council of BC to keep abreast of the most recent developments locally as well as in the bigger picture.
More of an effort is also being made to direct clients to longer term more environmentally friendly roofing products such as white reflective coatings and single ply membranes which are recognized by the Energy Star program.
At the same time we are looking for less energy consuming application methods. Most bituminous based materials such as "torch-on" roofing and traditional asphalt and gravel membranes consume large amounts of energy during application. Other materials exist which are cold applied and require less energy during application.
The acceptance of roof recovering is growing. It is being encouraged, where conditions are favourable, to lessen the amount of roof debris taken to landfills. Leaving existing insulation and roof coverings in place and installing new membranes over top can significantly reduce the amount of landfill over the life cycle of a building. More information about this topic can be obtained in a recent article in the Roofing Canada magazine.
Roof maintenance can also significantly increase the service life of a roof. This in turn reduces the demand to new materials and disposal of old over the life cycle of a building. Roof maintenance is a focus of our company
